SDICBSA's Jamboree Troop 704 Featured on "Scouting for Adventure"!

This Spring, when the six youth leaders of Jamboree Troop 704 got together to shoot sample video interviews for the Outdoor Channel, little did they know where it would lead. Over the Memorial Day Council Jamboree “shake-out” outing, they learned that they from all of the councils who had auditioned, they had been selected to be featured in "Scouting for Adventure" and were met by the camera crew preparing the Jamboree episodes. The camera crew followed the six boys that weekend, and were waiting again at the Jamboree in Virginia where they began taping before the Scouts could even get their tents up.

For the ten days of the the 100th Anniversary Jamboree, the camera crew taped Troop 704 from San Diego - Imperial Council every day doing activities from fishing to scuba and from a troop meeting to the arena show. The boys even got to enjoy occasional benefits from traveling with the crew - like jumping to the front of a few lines!

One of the best surprises was in learning that both of the producers onsite are Eagle Scouts. The Scouts followed were Senior Patrol Leader Blaine Shelton, ASPL’s Kenan Millet and Brendan Daly, Hometown News Correspondent Jovan Millet, and Patrol Leaders Justin Kirk and Sam White.

We're proud to say congratulations to these fine young men for the fantastic opportunity to be featured on the Outdoor Channel's "Scouting for Adventure" show and invite all of you to watch in the coming weeks!

Commissioners: New Unit Visit Tracking System (UVTS) Updates!

The Unit Visit Tracking System (UVTS) has been enhanced for council commissioner staff members, allowing an expanded form of use so that Commissioners from within a specific District can now view and submit tracking reports for any unit rather than only ones they are assigned to. Check out this new FAQ provided by National:

What is the Unit Visit Tracking System (UVTS)?
It’s an online method for commissioners to track information about contacts with units. It's recommended that Unit Commissioners file a UVTS report every time they make contact with a unit in order to update the status of that unit.

How does UVTS become available to commissioners?
Anyone registered by the council in any commissioner position may use UVTS from MyScouting.org. Commissioners must enter their member ID in My Profile for access to UVTS. This ensures that their registration as a Commissioner within the Council ties to their MyScouting.org profile.

Does the council assign unit commissioners to units in ScoutNET?
Effective with this new release, councils no longer assign unit commissioners to units in ScoutNET to provide UVTS unit access. All that is required of the council is the registration of commissioners in approved positions.

What commissioners will have access to UVTS?
Each commissioner is able to view unit visit reports entered for any unit in the organizational level of the commissioner’s registration. For example, unit and district level commissioners may view the reports for units in their district. The council level commissioners may view the reports for all units in every district.
What commissioners will be able to enter unit visit reports?
Anyone in each council who holds a commissioner position will be able to enter a unit visit report for any unit within the organization level associated with the commissioner position. For example, unit and district level commissioners may enter reports for units in their district. The council level commissioners may enter reports for all units in every district.

Does UVTS have other new features?
Yes. The Export Visits Summary lists each active, Traditional unit in the council or district and reports the number of unit visit reports entered for each unit. Each report now has more fields of data. The updated filter function allows for new sorting of visit reports. Persons who serve as administrative commissioners may enter Administrative Comments for any existing unit visit report in the council or district.

A New Recruiting Tool: Introducing BeAScout.org!

On Friday, the National BSA launched a NEW recruiting initiative called Be A Scout! The initiative is focused around a new website: http://www.beascout.org/ that will also be linked to the national Scouting website.

A View of the BeAScout.org Homepage

When interested youth or parents want to find more information Scouting and to join the unit nearest them, they can simply visit the new website, enter their address, and find the closest Pack, Troop, or Venturing Crew!

The Map View After An Address Search Is Entered
The search produces a google map with pins indicating all local units that fit the search criteria. From here, prospective youth and their parents can click on an individual unit link and find information about that unit. Information that can be displayed includes items like: unit number, meeting location and address, point of contacts with e-mails and phone number, unit website, and more!

With BeAScout.org, youth and parents now can find YOUR unit directly to fill out a quick form if interested in checking your unit out. Even better, the "lead management system" allows you to manage any leads that come in for your unit so you always know who has expressed interest, who has been contacted, and what the results might even be.

Of course, in order for BeAScout.org to function, we need unit leaders to go in and update their pins with the information they would like to display! Unit leaders (Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Varsity Coach or Crew Advisor), Committee Chairs, and Chartered Organization Representatives all have immediate access through MyScouting.org to update their respective unit pins.

Units can also designate a primary point of contact as well as two alternate points of contact to manage the leads - meaning a total of up to SIX individuals with access to BeAScout.org!

A view of the BeAScout.org pin update page - where you can insert a multitude of information for users to see!

Below, check out two resources that will guide you through the set-up and management of your BeAScout.org unit profile! The guides are filled with photos that show you step-by-step how to update your pin, manage leads, and more.

If you have any questions, contact your local District Executive for help!
